ONE WEEK FOR CHRISTMASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.......

GOOD BYE MADIBA. REST IN PEACE.

Nelson Mandela was born in 1918. He spent 27 years in prison (from 1962 to 1990) for trying to overthrow the pro-apartheid government. After he left prison, he worked to achieve human rights and a better future for everyone in South Africa. He became President of South Africa in 1994, and retired in 1999. Nelson Mandela died on 5 December 2013 following a lung illness.

OVERTHROW =
ACHIEVE = LOGRAR, ALCANZAR

 Nelson Mandela became famous for his long fight against bad government and racial prejudiceHe became a hero to people all over the world. As South Africa's President, he was respected for his courage and wisdom in bringing people together to live in peace.

COURAGE = VALOR
WISDOM = SABIDURÍA

Nelson Mandela is known as "Madiba," which is the name of the Xhosa tribe to which he belonged. It is considered an act of honor to refer to somebody by the name of his tribe.

A South African chain store has laid on one of the most touching tributes to Nelson Mandela we've seen in the past week – and it was in the form of a flash mob.
Woolworths teamed up with the Soweto Gospel Choir, who posed as shoppers and store workers at the Parkview store in Johannesburg.
This song was written during Mandela's incarceration as a call for his freedom.

Asimbonanga [we have not seen him]
Asimbonang' uMandela thina [we have not seen Mandela]
Laph'ekhona [in the place where he is]
Laph'ehleli khona [in the place where he is kept]

Asimbonanga
Asimbonang 'umfowethu thina [we have not seen our brother]
Laph'ekhona [in the place where he is]
Laph'wafela khona [in the place where he died]
Sithi: Hey, wena [We say: hey, you]
Hey, wena nawe [Hey, you and you]
Siyofika nini la' siyakhona [when will we arrive at our destination]

Fourth Thursday of November: THANKSGIVING DAY.

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn't until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

HAIYAN DISASTER

Tacloban, Philippines (CNN) -- No food. No water. Houses and buildings torn to pieces. Bodies scattered on the streets. Hospitals overrun with patients. Medical supplies running out.
SCATTERED = DESPERDIGADO
OVERRUN = SOBREPASADO
SUPPLIES = SUMINISTROS
As Typhoon Haiyan barreled across the South China Sea on Sunday, getting set to bring more destruction to Vietnam, many Filipinos grappled with devastation on a level they'd never seen before.
BARREL = IR DISPARADO

The Philippine Red Cross estimated at least 1,200 people were killed by Haiyan, but the full death toll could be significantly higher as officials make their way to remote, nearly inaccessible places pummeled by the storm.
DEATH TOLL = NÚMERO DE MUERTOS
PUMMEL = GOLPEAR
Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez told CNN it is "entirely possible" that 10,000 people may have died in the storm in Leyte province.
"People here were convinced that it looked like a tsunami," Romualdez told CNN.
"I have not spoken to anyone who has not lost someone, a relative close to them. We are looking for as many as we can," he said.
'This is really, really bad, worse than hell'
Carrying all they could from their devastated lives, a steady stream of typhoon victims kept arriving at Tacloban airport, looking for food, water and escape
(...)
Haiyan may be the strongest tropical cyclone in recorded history, but meteorologists said it will take further analysis to confirm whether it set a record.
The typhoon was 3.5 times more forceful than Hurricane Katrina, which hit the United States 2005.
But Haiyan's wrath has caused much more than tremendous loss of life and epic destruction -- it's also ruined the livelihoods of many survivors.
"This disaster on such a scale will probably have us working for the next year," said Sandra Bulling, international communications officer for the aid agency CARE. "Fishermen have lost their boats. Crops are devastated. This is really the basic income of many people."
WRATH = IRA
LIVELIHOODS = SUBSISTENCIA
CROPS = COSECHA
BASIC INCOME = SALARIO

Welcome to the 2013/14 Academic Year . FIGHT for YOUR DREAMS!

Alejandro Arévalo Ramos: ejemplo de superación.

ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS in real life: Oklahoma tornado.

Terrified cildren, hero teachers:

(CNN) -- It was the end of the school day. The kids at Plaza Towers Elementary School were stuffing their backpacks, looking forward to going home, playing with friends, eating snacks. But the tornado warnings changed that. When the twister came barreling in Monday afternoon, terrified young students huddled together in the hallways, screaming as walls and roofs caved in. Chairs and backpacks swirled above them. The winds and blaring sounds enveloped them. Cars from the parking lot landed just inches away. Teachers dove onto groups of kids to protect them from falling debris.(...)

 First responders and volunteers rushed to the scene to begin the treacherous work of searching for survivors. "We had to pull a car off a teacher and she had three little kids underneath her," one first responder, in tears, told KFOR. "Good job, teach." "I was on top of six kids," one sixth grade teacher said, working her way across the rubble. "I was lying on top. All of mine are OK." Teachers helped tear through several feet of rubble to rescue sobbing students, some of them injured. Rescue teams successfully pulled several kids from the leveled school. But with each passing hour, the hope began to fade.(...) The devastation is palpable throughout Moore.
