Good News: The Seabin Can Clean Up Our Ocean

Two Australian surfers have quit their jobs and come up with a brilliant solution to combat the millions of tons of trash in our oceans.
Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski’s Seabin invention is an ocean-cleaning device so simple and effective, we’re wondering why it took so long.
The water filtration system is much like what you’d find in a fish tank, but it has the potential to clean up an entire ocean:
QUIT = RENUNCIAR
TRASH = BASURA
DEVICE = ARTILUGIO

The concept is simple: A bucket, as seen in the GIF below, connects to a water pump, sucking in any floating trash inside a removable mesh bag (= bolsa de malla)
(...)  Turton and Ceglinski say they have never caught a fish or marine animal in their pumps in four years of testing.

Let's Use Drones for a Good Purpose.

Alec Momont of TU Delft's Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering ( Netherlands) designed his prototype for an ambulance drone together with the Living Tomorrow innovation platform as part of his graduation programme. When the emergency services receive a cardiac arrest call, this unmanned, autonomously navigating aeroplane can quickly deliver a defibrillator to the emergency scene.

CARDIAC ARREST = paro cardíaco
UNMANNED = no tripulado
DELIVER = entregar

A network of such drones could significantly increase the chance of survival following a cardiac arrest: from 8% to 80%!

Super Cool Science Experiments You Can Do at Home

If you like physics and chemistry, you will love these easy experiments.
................

Science is fun. Science is curiosity. We all have natural curiosity. Science is a process of investigating. It's posing questions and coming up with a method. It's delving in.

Together We Can Find the Cures

Scientists at IRB Barcelona dance for cancer, Alzheimer's and diabetes research

Scientists at Barcelona’s Institute for Research in Biomedicine have been busy learning their dance moves for this video to raise support for research into diseases such as cancer and metastasis, Alzheimer’s and diabetes.

International leaders in research
IRB Barcelona is one of the largest biomedical research centres in Spain; it  was given the distinction of Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—an award presented to the most competitive centres in Spain
IRB Barcelona is home to nearly 450 research, technical and support staff from 35 countries who share the common goal of contributing to the advancement of the biomedical sciences through investigator–driven research, and improving quality of life by applying advances in this field.

The benefits of MEDITATION

Somehow we all know that relaxation is good for us. But now a comprehensive scientific study
showing that deep relaxation changes our bodies on a genetic level has just been published.

These are some of the many BENEFITS  of MEDITATION:

  • Enhances (= mejora, aumenta)  the immune system.
  • Relaxes our nervous system
  • Decreases (=disminuye, ralentiza) the brain and body aging (=envejecimiento) process
  • Builds self-confidence.
  • Helps with focus & concentration
  • Increase (=aumenta) creativity
  • Improves learning ability and memory.
  • Higher intelligence
  • Better, more sociable behaviour
  • Helps keep things in perspective
  • Provides (=proporciona) peace of mind, happiness
  • Brings body, mind, spirit in harmony

So... take a deep breath and... relax!  Watch the tension melt (=derretirse) from your muscles and all your  worries vanish (=desaparecer).

Especially for Science Students: The Hadron Collider

Hadron Collider breakthrough as beams collide
(CNN) -- Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider managed to make two proton beams collide at high energy Tuesday, marking a "new territory" in physics, according to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
The $10 billion research tool has been accelerating the beams since November in the LHC's 17-mile tunnel on the border of Switzerland and France.
The beams have routinely been circulating at 3.5 TeV, or teraelectron volts, the highest energy achieved at the LHC so far, according to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
Experiments at the LHC may help answer fundamental questions...The collider may help scientists discover new properties of nature...
Sutton compared the experiments to Christopher Columbus sailing for the New World in 1492, when he knew what he was looking for but didn't know what he might find.
