Good News: The Seabin Can Clean Up Our Ocean

Two Australian surfers have quit their jobs and come up with a brilliant solution to combat the millions of tons of trash in our oceans.
Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski’s Seabin invention is an ocean-cleaning device so simple and effective, we’re wondering why it took so long.
The water filtration system is much like what you’d find in a fish tank, but it has the potential to clean up an entire ocean:
QUIT = RENUNCIAR
TRASH = BASURA
DEVICE = ARTILUGIO

The concept is simple: A bucket, as seen in the GIF below, connects to a water pump, sucking in any floating trash inside a removable mesh bag (= bolsa de malla)
(...)  Turton and Ceglinski say they have never caught a fish or marine animal in their pumps in four years of testing.

Happy Women's Day.

Happy Women's Day to all the women who fight for a better world around them, who fight to make a difference. At school, at home, at the workplace, wherever.

At last, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Nineteen years after “Titanic” made him a global star, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar Sunday night for his role as a vengeful frontiersman in “The Revenant”.
This is his brave and righteous speech of acceptance

SCRIPT:
“Making “The Revenant” was about man’s relationship to the natural world, a world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow.
Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people who will be most affected by this, for our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed.
“I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted.”

DROWN = AHOGAR
GREED= CODICIA
TAKE FOR GRANTED = DAR POR HECHO, SUBESTIMAR

Happy St, Valentine's Day, everyone!

Each year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia:

In the beginning, Valentine's Day was associated with romantic couples only but in recent times the festival is seen in much larger perspective. Now, people take opportunity of the day to wish ‘Happy Valentine's Day' to anyone they love be it father, mother, teachers, siblings, friends, co-workers or just anyone special to them. The idea behind this tradition is to celebrate love, get love and give love to everyone around us.

Approximately 150 million ❤ Valentine's Day cards ❤ are exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.

Do you want to surprise your beloved ones? No need to spend your money. Here you can learn about how  to make a Valentine's Day Heart Pop-up Card

Sing for the Climate.

Sing For The Climate is a Belgian initiative, made possible by the goodwill of many volunteers.
In 2012 Sing For The Climate was organised in Belgium: more than 380.000 people sang ‘Do it now‘! So we made a clip that united all the voices. This clip was shown to the Belgian Prime Minister, the State Secretary of Environment, the Flemish and the European Ministers of Environment. All the above signed the demands of the Campaign for the Climate and therefore committed themselves to take necessary measures. Finally, the clip was shown on the last plenary meeting of UN Climate Conference in Doha. It may be a coincidence, but only that last night they reached an agreement to extend the Kyoto Protocol.

Climate change is not a problem for the far future. It is already a problem. 300.000 people die annually, because of climate change. Floods, drought, hurricanes, food shortages,… The vast majority of these victims falling in the south, should not prevent us from feeling involved and sounding the alarm.
We need you!
Join our team by sending an email to info@singfortheclimate.com
And let us know in which country you want to help spread the song.
Let’s change climate change together!

How to Save a Life with Hands-Only CPR

Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an “out-of-hospital” setting (such as at home, at work or in a park). It consists of two easy steps:

  1. Call 112 (or send someone to do that).
  2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
When you call 112, you need to stay on the phone until the 112 dispatcher (operator) tells you to hang up. The dispatcher will ask you about the emergency. They will also ask for details like your location. It is important to be specific, especially if you’re calling from a mobile phone as that is not associated with a fixed location or address. Remember that answering the dispatcher’s questions will not delay the arrival of help.

CPR =  cardiopulmonary resuscitation

MOUTH TO MOUTH BREATHS =  respiración boca a boca

SETTING = localización, lugar

If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 112  and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic disco song "Stayin' Alive." CPR can more than double a person's chances of survival, and "Stayin' Alive" has the right beat for Hands-Only CPR.

The American Heart Association recommends CPR with a combination of breaths and compressions for:
  • All infants (up to age 1)
  • Children (up to puberty)
  • Anyone found already unconscious and not breathing normally
  • Any victims of drowning, drug overdose, collapse due to breathing problems, or prolonged cardiac arrest

Edgar Allan Poe's Birthday.

 On January 19th in 1809, poet, author and literary critic Edgar Allan Poe is born in Boston, Massachusetts.  He would have turned 201 yesterday.

Edgar Allan Poe is considered one of America's greatest writers. He is said to have invented the modern detective story. His works are full of suspense, as his most famous poem, The Raven (1845), shows. He was a very successful writer, yet in his personal life he struggled greatly.

The Raven:The Simpsons Version

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
    While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
            Only this and nothing more.”

One of America's major writers, Edgar Allan Poe was far ahead of his time in his vision of a special area of human experience—the "inner world" of dreams and the imagination. He wrote fiction, poetry, and criticism and also worked as a magazine editor.

 His dark writing, coupled with his mysterious death, has made him one of the most famous macabre figures in history.

Mini - Biography

'Annabel Lee' was the last poem Edgar Allan Poe wrote before his death in 1849.  Since the poem was written after Poe's wife's death, it is believed that it was probably written for her.

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
   In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
   By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
   Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
   In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
   I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven
   Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
   In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
   My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
   And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
   In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
   Went envying her and me—
Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
   In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
   Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
   Of those who were older than we—
   Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in Heaven above
   Nor the demons down under the sea
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
   Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
   In her sepulchre there by the sea—
   In her tomb by the sounding sea.

David Bowie Dies of Cancer at 69

The legendary musician known for musical innovation and experimentation with his image died 18 months after being diagnosed with cancer. The the iconic rock star whose career spanned more than half a century and whose influence transcended music, fashion and sexuality, has died aged 69.

........................................From: .www.theguardian.com

Bowie — born David Jones on January 8th, 1947 in London — took up the saxophone at age 13, and when he left Bromley Technical High School (where a friend permanently paralyzed his left pupil in a fight) to work as a commercial artist three years later, he had started playing in bands (the Konrads, the King Bees, David Jones and the Buzz)
The 1960s were not a happy period for Bowie, who remained a struggling artist, awaiting his breakthrough. He dabbled in many different styles of music (without commercial success), and other art forms such as acting, mime, painting, and playwriting. He finally achieved his commercial breakthrough in 1969 with the song "Space Oddity," which was released at the time of the moon landing. Despite the fact that the literal meaning of the lyrics relates to an astronaut who is lost in space, this song was used by the BBC in their coverage of the moon landing, and this helped it become such a success (...)
 In the mid 1970s, Bowie was a heavy cocaine abuser and sometime heroin user. In 1975, he changed tack. Musically, he released "Young Americans," a soul (or plastic soul as he later referred to it) album. This produced his first number one hit in the US, "Fame." He also appeared in his first major film, El hombre que cayó a la tierra (1976). With his different-colored eyes and skeletal frame, he certainly looked the part of an alien (...) Towards the end of the 1970s, he finally kicked his drug habit, and recorded the album many of his fans consider his best, the Japanese-influenced "Scary Monsters." Around this time, he played the Elephant Man on Broadway, to considerable acclaim (...)
Bowie has influenced the course of popular music several times and influenced several generations of musicians. His promotional videos in the 1970s and 80s are regarded as ground-breaking, and as a live concert act, he is regarded as the most theatrical of them all.

THE MARTIAN (OST) DAVID BOWIE - "STARMAN"

- SOME OF BOWIE'S BEST QUOTES -
“You can neither win nor lose if you don't run the race.”
I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.(Madison Square Gardens on his 50th birthday)
I always had a repulsive need to be something more than human.
“Confront a corpse at least once. The absolute absence of life is the most disturbing and challenging confrontation you will ever have.”

I wanted to prove the sustaining power of music
I'm just an individual who doesn't feel that I need to have somebody qualify my work in any particular way. I'm working for me.
“Make the best of every moment. We’re not evolving. We’re not going anywhere.” Esquire, 2004
“I find only freedom in the realms of eccentricity.”
“As an adolescent, I was painfully shy, withdrawn. I didn’t really have the nerve to sing my songs on stage, and nobody else was doing them. I decided to do them in disguise so that I didn’t have to actually go through the humiliation of going on stage and being myself. I continued designing characters with their own complete personalities and environments. I put them into interviews with me! Rather than be me — which must be incredibly boring to anyone — I’d take Ziggy in, or Aladdin Sane or The Thin White Duke. It was a very strange thing to do.”
