How U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden

(CNN) -- In the dark of night, U.S. helicopters approached a high-walled compound in Pakistan on a mission to capture or kill one of the world's most notorious terrorist leaders.
Less than 40 minutes later -- early Monday morning in Pakistan -- Osama bin Laden was dead, along with four others inside the complex, and the U.S. forces departed with the slain al Qaeda leader's body to fulfill a vow that originated shortly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.
And as he announced the raid at the White House Sunday night, U.S. President Barack Obama called bin Laden's death "the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al Qaeda."

DEPART = PARTIR........................................................................................ACHIEVEMENT= LOGRO, TRIUNFO
SLAIN = ASESINADO................................................................................. ...DEFEAT = VENCER
FULFILL A VOW = CUMPLIR UNA PROMESA

...One senior administration official called the investigation a "team effort" and a "model of really seamless cooperation" across agencies.

..The compound is in Abbottabad, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. The city sits in a mountainous region that is not heavily populated. Many of the residents are army personnel.

TEAM EFFORT = ESFUERZO DE EQUIPO
SEAMLESS = PERFECTO
HEAVILY POPULATED = DENSAMENTE POBLADA

...After years of intelligence work and months of following a specific lead, they traced a courier linked to bin Laden to the compound in Abbottabad, the officials said.
When first built, the compound was secluded and reachable by only a dirt road, the officials said. In recent years, more residences built up around it, but it remained by far the largest and most heavily secured property in the area, they said.

TRACE = SEGUIR LA PISTA.................................................................REACHABLE = ACCESIBLE
COURIER = CORREO, MENSAJERO......................................................REMAINED BY FAR = PERMANECER CON DIFERENCIA
SECLUDED = APARTADO, AISLADO
...A firefight was under way for most of the 40 minutes that U.S. Special Operations forces were in the compound, as the team encountered resistance from bin Laden and three other men, a senior defense official said.
The official said the forces had to fight their way through the first floor of the three-story building, where two adult males lived.

FIREFIGHT = TIROTEO
ENCOUNTER RESISTANCE = ENCONTRAR RESISTENCIA
MALE = VARÓN

...Bin Laden and his family lived on the second and third floors, and they were cleared last, with bin Laden killed in the last five or 10 minutes of the siege, the official said.
One of bin Laden's wives identified his body to U.S. forces after the team made visual identification, the official said.
In the end, all four of the combatants in the compound were dead, along with a woman whom one of the men used as a human shield, the officials said. Sources said bin Laden was shot in the head.

CLEAR = DESPEJAR
SIEGE = SITIO, ATAQUE
HUMAN SHIELD = ESCUDO HUMANO
SHOT = MUERTO DE UN TIRO

...U.S. officials said they used a number of methods to identify the body as bin Laden... Another U.S. official told CNN that bin Laden has already been buried at sea. His body was handled in the Islamic tradition, said the official...

...it jumped when it saw so many Madridistas...

(CNN) --
...Having waited 18 years to get their hands on the Copa del Rey -- or King's Cup -- trophy, defender Sergio Ramos made worldwide headlines by dropping it under the open-top bus carrying his teammates on a victory parade through the Spanish capital.
The triumphant players had returned home immediately from Valencia after beating arch-rivals Barcelona 1-0 in extra time in the final of the country's knockout competition on Wednesday night.
Club vice-captain Ramos was stood at the front of the bus holding the cup, which Real had not won since 1993, when it slipped from his grasp and under the front wheel of the vehicle.
There is no official word on whether the cup, which is 78 centimeters tall and weighs nine kilograms, maintained any damage during the incident...

The Spain World Cup winner also joked: "What happened with the Cup was a misunderstanding, it didn't fall ... it jumped when we got to Cibeles (a square in Madrid) and it saw so many Madridistas (Real fans)..."
The King's Cup has been competed for since 1902, with Real winning the trophy on 18 occasions.

(CNN) ...In an online video now making the rounds, T-Mobile imagines the pending nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton through the lens of viral video royalty.
In it, royal family look-alikes boogie down the aisle to boy band East 17's "House of Love."
Charles and Camilla do the bump, a moderately amused-looking Queen Elizabeth claps conservatively and Prince Harry looks amped up, grooving with a gaggle of bridesmaids before his big brother and bride-to-be appear.
"One's life is for sharing," reads text at the end of the video before the T-Mobile logo appears.
The ad, which was uploaded Friday to YouTube, had racked up about 4.6 million views by Monday morning.
The video was filmed at St. Bartholomew the Great Church in London (which U.S. movie buffs may recognize from 1994's "Four Weddings and a Funeral.")....
A T-Mobile spokesman told London's Daily Mail that the video is "a congratulatory message to William and Kate, as well as a way of capturing the nation's celebratory mood."

Japan's nuclear reactor: radioactive leaks

There has been a sharp rise in radioactive iodine in the sea off the Fukushima nuclear power plant, with radioactivity thousands of times higher than the legal limit. The most likely sources of the leaks are Reactors 2 and 3, as detailed here.
It is now believed radioactive leaks from the plant into the sea are continuous. Workers are planning to drain highly radioactive waste water from under turbine buildings of reactors 2, 3 and 4, into the centralised radiation waste treatment centre (labelled above). There is less radioactive water building up under turbine buildings of units 5 and 6 which threatens the safety of the reactors - this too needs to be pumped away.
But first workers have to drain 10,000 tons of low-level radioactive water currently in storage at the waste treatment centre straight into the sea to make room for the highly contaminated water.

SHARP RISE = subida brusca......................DRAIN = drenar....................CURRENTLY = actualmente
IODINE = yodo............................................WASTE = deshechos...............IN STORAGE = almacenado
THE MOST LIKELY = la más probable....... THREATEN = amenaza.........MAKE ROOM = hacer sitio

radiation waste treatment centre = centro de tratamiento de residuos radiactivos.
