Ready, steady... Christmas!! Enjoy!!

Sing along with ROBBIE WILLIAMS:

WHITE CHRISTMAS
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
"May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white"

(I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow)

(I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write

Merry what...??????

Remarkable people

William Kamkwamba, an example to all of us:

William Kamkwamba (born August 5, 1987) is a Malawian inventor and author. He gained fame in his country when, in 2002, he built a windmill to power a few electrical appliances in his family's house in Masitala using blue gum trees, bicycle parts, and materials collected in a local scrapyard

From Wikipedia,

WINDMILL = MOLINO DE VIENTO
ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES = APARATOS ELÉCTRICOS
SCRAPYARD = DESGUACE

Useful proverbs

"Tonight, in this election, you, the American people, reminded us that while our road has been hard, while our journey has been long, we have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back, and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America, the best is yet to come," Obama said to prolonged cheers.

Remember, remember the fifth of November...

 Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night

In 1605, thirteen young men planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Among them was Guy Fawkes, Britain's most notorious traitor.

After Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, English Catholics who had been persecuted under her rule had hoped that her successor, James I, would be more tolerant of their religion. James I had, after all, had a Catholic mother. Unfortunately, James did not turn out to be more tolerant than Elizabeth and a number of young men, 13 to be exact, decided that violent action was the answer.

RULE = mandato
TURN OUT = resultar

(...) The thing to do was to blow up the Houses of Parliament. In doing so, they would kill the King, maybe even the Prince of Wales, and the Members of Parliament who were making life difficult for the Catholics.

BLOW UP = estallar, hacer volar
(...) But Guy Fawkes and the other conspirators got caught before trying to ignite the powder.

IGNITE THE POWER = prender fuego a la pólvora

(...) On the very night that the Gunpowder Plot was foiled, on November 5th, 1605, bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the King. Since then, November 5th has become known as Bonfire Night.

FOIL = frustar
BONFIRE = hoguera

...........................................................................From: http://www.bonfirenight.net/gunpowder.php

This fragment of the movie "V for Vendetta" shows the beginning of a very old traditional rhyme which says (in one of its versions):

Remember, remember the fifth of November
The gunpowder treason and plot.
I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
The gunpowder treason and plot.
A stick or a stake for King James' sake
Will you please to give us a fagot
If you can't give us one, we'll take two;
The better for us and the worse for you!

Do you like BASKETBALL? Enjoy with Uncle Drew!

 Pepsi MAX went to a pick-up game in Bloomfield, New Jersey  pretending to shoot a documentary on a basketball player named “Kevin.” When his Uncle Drew came into the game, some magical things happened...

PICK-UP GAME = juego espontáneo
PRETEND = fingir
SHOOT = rodar, filmar

NBA Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving  endured hours of make-up to be transformed into an old man — ‘Uncle Drew’ — and then showed up at a street basketball game in New Jersey to school the ‘youngbloods’.

ROOKIE = novato, principiante
ENDURE = soportar
SHOW UP = aparecer
SCHOOL = instruir

At first Drew performed as an old man — little mobility, atrocious bricks and general incompetence. Then he starts to loosen up,   with awesome jumpers, handling the ball like a yoyo and rising for ferocious slams  while flabbergasted defenders and spectators watch in disbelief.

PERFORM = actuar, comportarse
BRICK = (ladrillo, ladrillazo). Lanzamiento con mucha fuerza que rebota en el tablero o en el aro y se va muy lejos.
AWESOME JUMPER =  saltos increíbles
HANDLE = manejar
SLAM = mate
FLABBERGASTED = atónito

October 2nd, International Day of Non-Violence

Established by the United Nations, the International Day of Non-Violence is held on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, India. He became one of the most respected spiritual and political leaders of the 1900's. GandhiJi helped free the Indian people from British rule through nonviolent resistance, and is honored by Indians as the father of the Indian Nation.

The Indian people called Gandhiji  'Mahatma', meaning Great Soul. At the age of 13 Gandhi married Kasturba, a girl the same age. Their parents arranged the marriage. The Gandhis had four children. Gandhi studied law in London and returned to India in 1891 to practice. In 1893 he took on a one-year contract to do legal work in South Africa (...)

He developed a method of action based upon the principles of courage, nonviolence and truth called Satyagraha (...) Satyagraha promoted nonviolence and civil disobedience as the most appropriate methods for obtaining political and social goals. In 1915 Gandhi returned to India. Within 15 years he became the leader of the Indian nationalist movement.

Using the principles of Satyagraha he led the campaign for Indian independence from Britain. Gandhi was arrested many times by the British for his activities in South Africa and India.
He was assassinated in Delhi on January 30, 1948, by a Hindu fanatic

Demonstrators said police were shooting into the crowd with rubber bullets; the police would not comment.
