How to Save a Life with Hands-Only CPR

Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an “out-of-hospital” setting (such as at home, at work or in a park). It consists of two easy steps:

  1. Call 112 (or send someone to do that).
  2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
When you call 112, you need to stay on the phone until the 112 dispatcher (operator) tells you to hang up. The dispatcher will ask you about the emergency. They will also ask for details like your location. It is important to be specific, especially if you’re calling from a mobile phone as that is not associated with a fixed location or address. Remember that answering the dispatcher’s questions will not delay the arrival of help.

CPR =  cardiopulmonary resuscitation

MOUTH TO MOUTH BREATHS =  respiración boca a boca

SETTING = localización, lugar

If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 112  and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic disco song "Stayin' Alive." CPR can more than double a person's chances of survival, and "Stayin' Alive" has the right beat for Hands-Only CPR.

The American Heart Association recommends CPR with a combination of breaths and compressions for:
  • All infants (up to age 1)
  • Children (up to puberty)
  • Anyone found already unconscious and not breathing normally
  • Any victims of drowning, drug overdose, collapse due to breathing problems, or prolonged cardiac arrest

Let's Use Drones for a Good Purpose.

Alec Momont of TU Delft's Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering ( Netherlands) designed his prototype for an ambulance drone together with the Living Tomorrow innovation platform as part of his graduation programme. When the emergency services receive a cardiac arrest call, this unmanned, autonomously navigating aeroplane can quickly deliver a defibrillator to the emergency scene.

CARDIAC ARREST = paro cardíaco
UNMANNED = no tripulado
DELIVER = entregar

A network of such drones could significantly increase the chance of survival following a cardiac arrest: from 8% to 80%!

The benefits of MEDITATION

Somehow we all know that relaxation is good for us. But now a comprehensive scientific study
showing that deep relaxation changes our bodies on a genetic level has just been published.

These are some of the many BENEFITS  of MEDITATION:

  • Enhances (= mejora, aumenta)  the immune system.
  • Relaxes our nervous system
  • Decreases (=disminuye, ralentiza) the brain and body aging (=envejecimiento) process
  • Builds self-confidence.
  • Helps with focus & concentration
  • Increase (=aumenta) creativity
  • Improves learning ability and memory.
  • Higher intelligence
  • Better, more sociable behaviour
  • Helps keep things in perspective
  • Provides (=proporciona) peace of mind, happiness
  • Brings body, mind, spirit in harmony

So... take a deep breath and... relax!  Watch the tension melt (=derretirse) from your muscles and all your  worries vanish (=desaparecer)

WHO advises to use our MOBILES in moderation.

(CNN) -- Radiation from cell phones can possibly cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization. The agency now lists mobile phone use in the same "carcinogenic hazard" category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform.

HAZARD = PELIGRO, AMENAZA
LEAD = PLOMO
ENGINE EXHAUST = GASES de MOTOR

... A team of 31 scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, made the decision after reviewing peer-reviewed studies on cell phone safety. The team found enough evidence to categorize personal exposure as "possibly carcinogenic to humans."

PEER-REVIEWED = CONTRASTADO
SAFETY = SEGURIDAD
EXPOSURE = EXPOSICIÓN

...The type of radiation coming out of a cell phone is called non-ionizing. It is not like an X-ray, but more like a very low-powered microwave oven."What microwave radiation does in most simplistic terms is similar to what happens to food in microwaves, essentially cooking the brain," Black said.

LOW-POWERED= DE BAJA INTENSIDAD/PODER

...Results from the largest international study on cell phones and cancer was released in 2010. It showed participants in the study who used a cell phone for 10 years or more had doubled the rate of brain glioma, a type of tumor. To date, there have been no long-term studies on the effects of cell phone usage among children.

..."Children's skulls and scalps are thinner. So the radiation can penetrate deeper into the brain of children and young adults. Their cells are at a dividing faster rate, so the impact of radiation can be much larger." said Black of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

LONG-TERM = A LARGO PLAZO
SKULLS and SCALPS = calaveras y cuero cabelludo
DIVIDING FASTER RATE = una ritmo/velocidad de división más rapida

...Manufacturers of many popular cell phones already warn consumers to keep their device away from their body.
The Apple iPhone 4 safety manual says users' radiation exposure should not exceed FCC guidelines: "When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15 millimeters (5/8 inch) away from the body."
BlackBerry Bold advises users to, "keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 inch (25 millimeters) from your body when the BlackBerry device is transmitting."

WARN = ADVERTIR
DEVIDCE = APARATO ELECTRÓNICO
WIRELESS = SIN CABLES
ADVISE = ACONSEJAR
