How to Save a Life with Hands-Only CPR

Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an “out-of-hospital” setting (such as at home, at work or in a park). It consists of two easy steps:
 

1. Call 112 (or send someone to do that).
2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. 
   

When you call 112, you need to stay on the phone until the 112 dispatcher (operator) tells you to hang up. The dispatcher will ask you about the emergency. They will also ask for details like your location. It is important to be specific, especially if you’re calling from a mobile phone as that is not associated with a fixed location or address. Remember that answering the dispatcher’s questions will not delay the arrival of help.

If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 112  and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic disco song "Stayin' Alive." CPR can more than double a person's chances of survival, and "Stayin' Alive" has the right beat for Hands-Only CPR.

The American Heart Association recommends CPR with a combination of breaths and compressions for:

• All infants (up to age 1)
• Children (up to puberty)
• Anyone found already unconscious and not breathing normally
• Any victims of drowning, drug overdose, collapse due to breathing problems, or prolonged cardiac arrest

Edgar Allan Poe's Birthday.

 On January 19th in 1809, poet, author and literary critic Edgar Allan Poe is born in Boston, Massachusetts.  He would have turned 201 yesterday.

Edgar Allan Poe is considered one of America's greatest writers. He is said to have invented the modern detective story. His works are full of suspense, as his most famous poem, The Raven (1845), shows. He was a very successful writer, yet in his personal life he struggled greatly.

David Bowie Dies of Cancer at 69

The legendary musician known for musical innovation and experimentation with his image died 18 months after being diagnosed with cancer. The the iconic rock star whose career spanned more than half a century and whose influence transcended music, fashion and sexuality, has died aged 69.

Bowie — born David Jones on January 8th, 1947 in London — took up the saxophone at age 13, and when he left Bromley Technical High School (where a friend permanently paralyzed his left pupil in a fight) to work as a commercial artist three years later, he had started playing in bands (the Konrads, the King Bees, David Jones and the Buzz)

The 1960s were not a happy period for Bowie, who remained a struggling artist, awaiting his breakthrough. He dabbled in many different styles of music (without commercial success), and other art forms such as acting, mime, painting, and playwriting. He finally achieved his commercial breakthrough in 1969 with the song "Space Oddity," which was released at the time of the moon landing. Let's Use Drones for a Good Purpose.

Alec Momont of TU Delft's Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering ( Netherlands) designed his prototype for an ambulance drone together with the Living Tomorrow innovation platform as part of his graduation programme. When the emergency services receive a cardiac arrest call, this unmanned, autonomously navigating aeroplane can quickly deliver a defibrillator to the emergency scene.

A network of such drones could significantly increase the chance of survival following a cardiac arrest: from 8% to 80%!
